Product Update

Turf Science Live 2014 proved once again to be an exciting event showcasing the latest research and technological innovations in turf agronomy.

Presented by Everris, Jacobsen and Syngenta, it gave a practical hands-on opportunity to interact with leading specialists in many aspects of turf management, and find out how the techniques could be used to benefit turf playing surfaces. The limited numbers allowed individuals in small groups to get the most information out of each demonstration.

Turf Application on Target

Presented by: Rod Burke & Caroline Carroll, Syngenta

The new range of Syngenta XC (eXtra Coverage) turf nozzles are specifically designed to cope with spraying on undulating golf courses, aide lower water volumes and reduce drift - with exclusive new features to deliver consistent coverage.

Outfield Nutrition - Maximum Gain, Minimum Pain

Presented by: Andy Owen, Everris International

This station highlights the options available for delivering outfield nutrition. It focuses on the pros and cons of nutrition delivery technologies that can be applied to large areas of fairway/outfield turf. With increasingly changeable weather patterns and mounting legislation and budgetary pressures, using the most efficient technologies delivers tangible benefits. By evaluating and understanding the fertiliser technology options available, turf managers can maximise turf performance and limit financial and environmental impacts.

Greens Maintenance with Minimal Disturbance

Presented by: Ian Mitchell & Jamie Hughes, Jacobsen

Ongoing research conducted at RJ National will look at greens maintenance techniques and practices for growing finer turf grasses.

This station will present the use of different types of rollers, varying clip rates for different seasons, including the use of groomers and brushes, to increase ball speed and trueness.

Turf Enhancement

Presented by: Louis Simard, Syngenta

Many factors can impose stress on turf plants including drought, temperature extremes, nutrient deficiency and high or low light. Increasing climatic extremes make stressful periods more challenging to predict and prevent. New research has revealed some plant protection products can significantly improve stress tolerance and enhance playability.

Performance Through Understanding

Presented by: Henry Bechelet, Everris Limited & Karl Parry, inventor of the ParryMeter

This station focuses on the measurement of turf performance and the way in which knowledge helps us improve the condition of our turf.

By understanding turf's response to specific inputs and practices, we can work towards improving playing qualities with more efficient, effective maintenance programmes. Through accurate measurement of turf performance, such as putting surface smoothness, we can also focus on delivering attributes that are important to players. Using the latest technology, we can record the impact of different management practices to help build a picture of what works best. Over time, data collection will assist turf managers in optimising resources and producing better surfaces.

Intraseeding Research on Golf Course Fairways

Presented by: Brian Horgan, Ph.D., University of Minnesota, made possible by Jacobsen

Introducing new species or cultivars of turfgrass into an existing sward is often a futile effort. Although intraseeding is common on golf course fairways, success of maturing new seeds is limited due to competition with existing grasses for nutrients, water and light. This station will highlight research that can improve intraseeding success with a slit seeder and ultra-light rates of glyphosate. Brian will give details of the research project and provide implementable solutions for intraseeding.
