Overview

Rescue is a highly selective grass weed herbicide, for the removal of Ryegrass whilst leaving fine turf grasses unaffected. Rescue is approved for use across the golf course, including greens, tees, fairways, approaches, semi-rough and rough.

Ryegrass in fescue

Removal of Ryegrass infestation (above) from greens can achieve more consistent ball roll and a better quality fine turf surface. On fairways, Ryegrass control can improve both the playability and visual appearance of the course, as well and helping  to achieve a clean finish from mowing. In rough areas thinning out dense Ryegrass makes it easier to locate balls and avoid slow play. Research also shows the potential to of Rescue to enhance the environmental value of out-of-play rough areas, by removing unwanted ryegrass and creating a habitat where wildflowers and biodiversity can thrive.

The product has been extensively trialled by green keepers across the UK during 2008 & 2009 - successfully controlling Ryegrass on links, heathland and parkland courses. The trialists have alo noted useful control of other grass coarse grass weeds, including Yorkshire Fog and Purple Moor-grass.

Rescue is a produc t of the £600m annual Syngenta  investment in global R&D and developed at the company's dedicated International Turf Research Centre, at Stein in Switzerland. Following extensive trials by STRI, UK golf course managers are the first in the world to receive approval for the use of Rescue.

Chemical/Formulation

RESCUE contains 45 g/l (4.59% w/w) pinoxaden and 11.25 g/l (1.15% w/w) cloquintocet-mexyl as an emulsifiable concentrate.

Pinoxaden is an entirely new active ingredient for the turf industry, from the new class of 'den' herbicide technology.

RESCUE is rapidly taken up into the plant and quickly moves through the plant to leaf tip and roots.

Rescue activity

RESCUE targets specific enzymes responsible for cell division, stopping the growth of susceptible plants and quickly leading to leaf die back.   The growth enzyme in Ryegrass is especially susceptible to the effects of pinoxaden, whilst Poa annua, for example, is resistent to the effects. With Fescue grasses the fine leaf architecture limits the uptake of the active ingredient, so Fescues are unaffected by RESCUE aplication at the recommneded rates. Browntop or Colonial Bentgrass has, occasionally, shown signs of slight discolouration following application, but quickly recovers in good growing conditions.

Rescue grass selectivity

RESCUE is formulated with a built-in wetter for optimised performance and simplified use.

Packaging

RESCUE is supplied in 1-litre Syngenta S-pac packaging.

The Syngenta S-pac has key advantages for operators including:

  • No fiddly foil seal, makes opening and pouring easier and faster
  • Large, easy grip lids are safe to handle and fast to use
  • Large bottle opening is easy and safe to pour
  • Rigid bottles are robust and safe to handle
  • A slippy internal lining makes rinsing easy and ensures cleaner bottles
  • Once rinsed, the S-pac is compleytely recyclable through and approved container recycling schemes

How to Use?

For best results commence the RESCUE programme in the autumn, whilst growing conditions are still conducive for effective Ryegrass control and successful over seeding, typically through September and October.

Rescue Programme graphic

The RESCUE Programme can also be started in the spring. Apply RESCUE when turf is actively growing to encourage uptake into target Ryegrasses - typically from end-April to end-June when air and soil temperatures are consistently above 8-10°C. Any soft re-growth following autumn applications can be successfully treated in the spring. This gives a good opportunity for remaining fine turf plants to spread and for successful over seeding to fill in gaps left when the Ryegrass is killed.

A subsequent autumn treatment may be beneficial to control heavy, well established weed Ryegrass populations.  Follow up RESCUE treatments may be required in future seasons where new Ryegrass seedlings germinate and establish. A successful over seeding programme and applications of PRIMO MAXX to encourage a thicker sward will minimise the chance of Ryegrass reinfestation.

Application rate

The application rates for RESCUE are 1.0 - 1.33 l/ha in the spring and 1.0 l/ha in the autumn. Up to two applications per season may be applied.

Rescue application rates

Application may be by conventional golf course sprayer, pedestrian sprayer or knapsack. Even cover of the weeds is essential for good results. Apply through a conventional hydraulic sprayer using a pressure of 2-4 bars, with  a water volume of 250 - 500 l/ha. Apply as a MEDIUM spray.

Avoid over wetting that can lead to excessive run-off and reduced efficacy. Syngenta spray trials have shown application at the lower recommended water volumes can improve spray retention on turf leaves, as well as increasing sprayer output per hour for more timely application.

For Autumn applications with knapsack sprayers, use 40 ml of RESCUE in 10 litres of water, or 53.3 ml in 10 litres of water for spring application.

Ensure that the sprayer is properly cleaned and washed before use. Calibrate the sprayer correctly  before use. Do not leave spray liquid in the sprayer for long periods (i.e. during meal breakss or overnight).

Over seeding advice

The rapid die-back of treated weed Ryegrasses allows unaffected fine turf species to spread and fill the gaps. In many instances turf managers will also take the opportunity to over sow the treated areas with fine turf species, to speed up the process of rejuvenation and quickly restore the fine turf surface. This also minimises the risk of Ryegrass or other weeds recolinising the gaps.

The ideal time for over seeding is when treated plants have died back and pass the 'RESCUE Rub Test' - the treated Ryegrass plants break up when gently rubbed (below). Typically this is between two to three weeks after treatment, but can vary according to the time of year and growing conditions.

The success of over seeding programmes can be significantly enhanced with an application of PRIMO MAXX five days before sowing. This treatment will suppress existing turf growth and can allow the seedlings to establish more effectively. STRI trials have shown Primo MAXX application at this time can achieve a 220% increase in turf density, compared to over seeding alone.

For spring RESCUE Programmes, further PRIMO MAXX applications to over seeded turf from the two to three leaf stage and continuing through the season will encourage stronger establishment and deeper rooting of new plants, to create a better and more durable playing surface.

Tankmixes

Do not tank mix RESCUE with any other products.

Where RESCUE is being used in sequence with any hormone herbicide application, always allow 21 days from any previous treatment before applying RESCUE, or wait seven days from RESCUE treatment before appying another hormone herbicide.

Handling

Engineering control of operator exposure must be used where reasonably practicable in addition to the following personal protective equipment.

WEAR SUITABLE PROTECTIVE CLOTHING (COVERALLS) AND SUITABLE PROTECTIVE GLOVES when handling the concentrate.

However, engineering controls may replace personal protective equipment if a COSHH assessment shows they provide an equal or higher standard of protection.

WHEN USING, DO NOT EAT, DRINK OR SMOKE.

WASH CONCENTRATE from skin or eyes immediately.

WASH HANDS AND EXPOSED SKIN before meals and after work.

Environmental

RESCUE has undergone full and rigorous risk assessments of the potential environmental impacts throughout the UK registration and approval process. The evaluation of the ecological studies has also fully satisfied the independent regulatory authorities.

PASSED risk assessments used by the Regulatory Authorities for arthropods, bees and soil organisms, including earthworms. There was no effect on either nitrogen or carbon mineralization at doses up to nearly 5 times the predicted environmental concentration in soil.

PASSED assessments of risk from spray drift during application for all aquatic organisms, including plant species. RESCUE has no LERAP buffer zone requirement meaning that treatments can be made alongside water courses, whilst taking cae to avoid contamination.

PASSED risk assessments carried out on operator exposure, bystander exposure and re-entry of treated areas by children.

Do not contaminate water with the product or its container. Do not clean application equipment near surface water. Avoid contamination via drains from golf courses and roads.
